The volume
Every biographical film makes a promise and breaks it somewhere: it promises a person who actually existed and delivers a story: a set of choices about what to keep, what to tighten, what to add. These five declare, each in its own way, how much invention a real life will bear without being betrayed. At one end, the legend admitted out loud and placed in the mouth of a witness with excellent reasons to lie. At the other, the account that leaves the facts where they are and changes only the order in which they reach us. In between, three films that put their license in one precise spot: a date, the place of a real man inside a crisis, an entire subplot with an accusation inside it. Since the ending is already known, none of them can count on surprise: each has to find something to fear elsewhere, and the volume shows where they went to get it.
