The volume
Five films that take an unsuitable person and drop them into a world with rules of its own. An agency processing aliens at a service window. A family house, seen from the side of the people who work in it. A museum that gets to its feet after dark. A city where hatred is learned in childhood like a nursery rhyme. A mystery that would require a detective. Those rules are not up for negotiation: you learn them or you pay for them, and the whole comedy of the volume lives in the gap between someone who ignores them and a place that applies them anyway. The heart arrives later, when you notice the place is working on its guest. Four films measure how much a world can change a person; the fifth measures what happens when it cannot, and makes a virtue of it.
The five films, and why they are here
Men in Black
A whole universe handed to the viewer while somebody gets it wrong in front of them: exposition that never stops the run.
Mrs. Doubtfire
A disguise that gives back the hours he had lost and, in the same gesture, imposes the discipline he never had.
Night at the Museum
A rule of the place that allows no argument, and a protagonist who has to start studying in order to be obeyed.
Jojo Rabbit
The lightness granted in the first part is what makes the silence of the second unbearable: tone as structure.
The Big Lebowski
The scaffolding of noir held up with the least suitable man inside it: the comedy comes out of the space he leaves.
