The volume

A tragedy. A nation sliding into the dark while the band on stage keeps playing. A woman we know is already dead from the first minute. The bill that comes to someone whose dream actually came true. The price of being let into a group. These are different loads, and none of the five films rests them in the same place: one keeps all the splendor of the show intact, and hurts more precisely because of it; one shuts the music inside a single room and lets it out only once; one sings with other people's songs. What holds them together is not a common theme but a craft question: how much weight will a form born to lift an audience bear, and from which side do you load it so that it does not give. Underneath all of it runs a second question, which is who the song belongs to.

The five films, and why they are here

  1. La La Land

Respecting the grammar of the classical musical for almost the whole film and breaking it once, exactly where it is needed.

  2. Grease

Numbers built as group ceremonies that reorder the hierarchy with every song: the song belongs to the clan.

  3. West Side Story

The most festive instrument in the genre turned into a battlefield, and an ending that gives up singing.

  4. Moulin Rouge!

Singing with melodies the audience already knows: every number arrives loaded with the meaning it had before.

  5. Cabaret

The songs shut on a stage except one: the only one that leaves the club is the one carrying the meaning of the film.
