The volume
In two of these films the cup never arrives. In a third it does, and it goes to someone who had not led the race. In the last two it is genuinely lifted, and by then the story has spent an hour establishing where the account actually closes. It is a strange choice for a genre that carries a scoreboard inside itself and could always let that do the talking: the verdict stays there, legible, and stops being the measure of what we have watched. What changes from one film to the next is the point at which the exchange is declared and who declares it out loud, almost always before the race, in broad daylight, with somebody saying what they will count as a win. In none of the five is the main obstacle the opponent on the other side of the field.
