The volume

Five films that take from war what cinema had given it for decades, the glory, the meaning, the speech that explains the slaughter, and then look at a man from whom those consolations have been withdrawn. Each one takes away a different thing, at a different point, which is why the five results do not resemble one another. One keeps the whole apparatus of the genre and changes only the terms on which we watch it: it asks us to receive the fighting rather than admire it. One removes the two opposite shelters, the model soldier and the veteran to be pitied, and moves the fracture inside the unit. One gives up even the battle and keeps only a route. One breaks into two pieces that are never sewn back together. The last lifts the camera off the men and leaves it in the tall grass.

The five films, and why they are here

  1. Saving Private Ryan

An assignment whose arithmetic does not work, kept that way for the whole film: the men have to decide its value themselves.

  2. Platoon

The main conflict moved inside the group: the viewer has no side to root for, and the witness does not come out absolved.

  3. 1917

The nearly unbroken telling forces you to pay in full for every meter: duration as a structural choice.

  4. Full Metal Jacket

A boot camp and a front that do not speak to each other: the factory that makes a soldier and the place where he is spent, watched in two movements.

  5. The Thin Red Line

The single protagonist dissolved into a chorus of voices, and a nature that offers no comfort: contemplation as an answer to realism.
